When a pave band works

Pave bands pair best with a plain solitaire. The engagement ring carries the centre stone, the wedding band adds brilliance along the finger, and neither competes with the other.

If the engagement ring already has pave on its band or a halo, two heavily set rings side by side can read as cluttered, and the stones rub against each other where they meet. In that case a plain band is usually the better companion.

Full or half pave

Half pave covers the top of the band only, leaving smooth metal underneath. It looks identical from above, sits more comfortably, resizes more easily, and does not press small stones into your palm. For a ring worn every day, half is the sensible choice.

Full pave runs the whole way around, which matters only if you want the ring to look the same when it rotates.

Setting styles

Bead set pave holds each stone with tiny beads of metal, the traditional method, with the most sparkle and the most exposure. Channel set runs stones between two rails of metal, completely flush and snag-free, which is far more practical for hands-on work. Shared prong sits between the two.

Living with it

Pave stones are small and held by small beads. They are secure in normal wear but worth checking every couple of years, and a hard knock can loosen one. Replacement is inexpensive. Resizing is possible but takes more care than a plain band, since the setting must be maintained through the process.
