The 4Cs of Diamonds Explained for South African Buyers
The 4Cs are the universal grading system for diamonds and lab-grown diamonds. Every certified stone is assessed on cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. Understanding what each one means, and more importantly which ones to prioritise, is the difference between buying a stone that looks exceptional and spending more than you need to on grades that are invisible to the naked eye.
This guide explains all four in plain language, with real South African pricing examples to show how each grade affects cost.
Why the 4Cs Matter
A diamond certificate without 4Cs knowledge is just a piece of paper with numbers on it. Once you understand what you are reading, you can compare stones accurately, avoid overpaying for grades that do not improve the appearance of the ring, and identify genuine value at every price point.
The 4Cs system was developed by the Gemological Institute of America and is now the global standard. Every IGI and GIA certificate uses the same grading criteria, which means a VS1 grade in South Africa means exactly the same thing as a VS1 grade anywhere else in the world.
Cut: The Most Important of the Four Cs
Cut is the most important factor in how a diamond looks. It determines how much light the stone captures, reflects internally, and returns to the eye as brilliance, fire, and scintillation. A well-cut diamond of modest colour and clarity will look significantly more beautiful than a poorly cut diamond of better colour and clarity.
Cut grade is not the same as shape. Shape refers to the outline of the stone: round, oval, emerald, pear. Cut grade refers to the precision of the facets, proportions, and polish that determine the stone's optical performance.
For round brilliant diamonds, GIA and IGI assign formal cut grades: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. For an engagement ring, Excellent or Very Good are the appropriate grades. Anything below Very Good will be visibly less brilliant than a well-cut stone of the same size.
Fancy shapes, including oval, pear, cushion, emerald, and marquise, do not receive a formal cut grade on most certificates. Instead, cut quality is assessed through the proportions of the stone: table percentage, depth percentage, length-to-width ratio, and symmetry. Ask for guidance on fancy shape proportions when selecting a stone.
Do not compromise on cut. It is the single factor that has the greatest impact on how the ring looks in person.
Colour: How White Is the Stone?
Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D to Z. D is completely colourless. Z is visibly yellow or brown. The grades from D through Z represent progressively increasing levels of colour, most of which are detectable only by a trained eye under controlled conditions.
For an engagement ring, the practical range to consider is D through H.
D, E, and F are colourless. No warmth whatsoever is visible to the naked eye or under magnification. These are the premium grades and carry a price premium to match.
G and H are near-colourless. The slight warmth present in G and H is not visible to the naked eye when the stone is set in a ring. In a white gold or platinum setting, G is indistinguishable from D to any observer without gemological equipment. In a yellow gold setting, H is equally invisible.
I and J show a very faint warmth that may be detectable by a careful observer in a white metal setting but is largely absorbed by a yellow gold setting. I and J represent excellent value if the ring will be set in yellow gold.
The practical recommendation: choose G or H colour in white gold or platinum. Choose H or I in yellow or rose gold. The visual result is identical to a D colour stone at a significantly lower price.
Clarity: How Clean Is the Stone?
Clarity refers to the presence of internal characteristics called inclusions and surface characteristics called blemishes. The clarity scale runs from FL (flawless) through VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, and down to I1, I2, and I3.
The important distinction is between eye-clean and eye-visible inclusions. An eye-clean stone has no inclusions that are visible to the naked eye when the ring is worn and viewed at a normal distance. An eye-visible inclusion is one that can be seen without magnification, which reduces the beauty of the stone.
FL and IF are flawless or internally flawless. No inclusions under 10x magnification. Very rare and very expensive. The visual difference between FL and VS1 is invisible to the naked eye.
VVS1 and VVS2 have minute inclusions that are extremely difficult to see even under 10x magnification. Practically indistinguishable from FL to any naked eye observer.
VS1 and VS2 have minor inclusions visible under 10x magnification but not to the naked eye. This is the recommended sweet spot for engagement rings. VS1 in particular offers an eye-clean stone at a meaningful saving over VVS grades.
SI1 can be eye-clean depending on the type and position of the inclusion. An SI1 stone with an inclusion at the edge of the stone, where it will be covered by a prong, is functionally equivalent to a VS1 at a lower price. An SI1 stone with an inclusion in the centre of the table is visible to a careful observer. SI1 requires individual assessment rather than grade-based selection.
SI2 and below typically have eye-visible inclusions and are not recommended for engagement ring centre stones.
Carat: How Much Does the Stone Weigh?
Carat is the weight of the stone. One carat equals 0.2 grams. In terms of physical size, a 1ct round brilliant diamond measures approximately 6.5mm in diameter. A 2ct round brilliant measures approximately 8.2mm.
Carat weight is the most straightforward of the four Cs but the most misunderstood. Buyers often equate carat with size, but carat is weight, not dimension. A well-cut 1ct stone will appear larger than a poorly cut 1ct stone because a deep cut hides weight in the bottom of the stone rather than spreading it across the top.
Elongated shapes such as oval, pear, and marquise appear larger than round stones of the same carat weight because they cover more surface area of the finger. A 1ct oval typically looks as large as a 1.2ct round on the hand.
Price per carat increases significantly at the so-called magic numbers: 0.5ct, 0.75ct, 1ct, 1.5ct, and 2ct. A 0.95ct stone is virtually indistinguishable in size from a 1ct stone but costs noticeably less per carat because it sits below the 1ct threshold. This is a genuine value opportunity worth being aware of.

Do the 4Cs apply to moissanite?
Moissanite is not graded on the full 4Cs system because it is not a diamond. GRA certificates for moissanite assess colour grade, typically D-F for top-grade stones, and clarity grade, typically VVS. What does IGI vs GIA certified mean?
IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America) are both internationally recognised gemological laboratories that grade diamonds on the 4Cs. GIA is considered the more prestigious and conservative grader. An IGI VS1 stone and a GIA VS1 stone are both VS1, but some buyers prefer GIA for its reputation. Both are legitimate. Avoid any diamond sold with only an in-house certificate.
Is a 1ct lab-grown diamond the same size as a 1ct mined diamond?
Yes. Carat is a weight measurement. A 1ct lab-grown diamond and a 1ct mined diamond of the same shape and cut proportions will be the same physical size. The only difference is origin and price.
