A curved band, also called a contoured or shaped band, is cut to follow the profile of a specific engagement ring rather than sitting straight across it. It exists to solve one problem: the gap.

The gap problem
A straight wedding band pressed against a halo, a raised setting, or a low-set stone leaves a visible V-shaped gap between the two rings. It catches on clothing, collects dirt, and the two rings knock against each other as the hand moves, wearing both over time.
A curved band is shaped so its inner edge follows the outline of the engagement ring, closing that gap completely. The two rings then sit as one piece.
When you need one
If your engagement ring has a halo, a hidden halo, a cathedral setting, or any centre stone that dips below the top line of the band, a straight band will leave a gap.
If it is a plain solitaire with a flat band, a straight plain band will sit flush already and a curved band is unnecessary.
Getting the fit right
A curved band only works if the curve matches the specific ring it sits against. A generic curve against a different profile can leave a worse gap than a straight band would.
