Eternity Rings

An eternity ring carries stones around the band rather than concentrating them in one place. The name comes from the unbroken circle, and it is traditionally given to mark a milestone: a wedding, an anniversary, or the birth of a child.

Full or half eternity

This is the decision that matters most, and half eternity is the right answer for most people.

A full eternity ring has stones all the way around. It looks identical from every angle, which is its appeal. But it cannot be resized without effectively rebuilding the ring, and the stones on the underside sit against your finger and against any ring worn next to it, where they gradually wear.

A half eternity has stones across the top half only. From above it looks exactly the same as a full eternity. The underside is smooth metal, which means it can be resized normally, sits more comfortably, and does not grind against a neighbouring ring. Unless you specifically want the ring to read the same when it rotates, half eternity is the more practical choice.

Stone settings

Claw set stones sit higher and catch more light but have small prongs that can snag. Channel set stones sit between two rails of metal, flush and completely snag-free, which makes them the most practical for daily wear. Bezel set stones are individually rimmed in metal, the most secure of all and visually distinct.

Wearing it with other rings

An eternity ring worn against an engagement ring will rub. Over years, a harder metal will wear a softer one, and stones on the underside of a full eternity will wear against whatever they touch. Keeping both rings in the same carat gold slows this. Choosing half eternity avoids the stone-on-stone contact entirely.

Can an eternity ring be resized?

Half eternity rings can be resized normally, and your first resize is free within twelve months. Full eternity rings cannot be resized conventionally, since there is no plain metal to cut and rejoin.
