The Supply Chain Difference

Mined diamonds come from the earth through processes that have environmental and social implications. The mining industry uses significant land and water. Historically, conflict diamonds funded armed conflict in several African countries, which led to the Kimberley Process certification scheme in 2003. The Kimberley Process has been criticised for its limited scope, as it only certifies that diamonds are not funding armed conflict and does not address broader environmental or labour concerns.

Lab-grown diamonds have a simpler supply chain with lower environmental impact than mining. The primary resource consumption is energy, used in the HPHT or CVD production process. Laboratories that use renewable energy have a significantly lower carbon footprint per stone than the mining process.

The Certification Difference

Both mined and lab-grown diamonds are certified by the same laboratories: GIA, IGI, and AGS. The certificate for a lab-grown diamond states explicitly that it is lab-grown and identifies the growth method. The grades on the certificate apply exactly as they would for a mined diamond.

GIA began issuing lab-grown diamond certificates in 2019. An IGI-certified lab-grown diamond and a GIA-certified mined diamond of the same grade are assessed to the same standards by the same criteria. The only difference on the certificate is the origin statement.
